Compasio History

When Allan & Joane first came to Thailand in 2001 while leading an outreach team, they bumped into the issues of girls-at-risk, poverty and vulnerability, and  the displaced peoples of Burma.  They were shocked to hear that one of their sweet, smiling, female English students — barely in her teens —  was being pressured by her mother and at immediate risk of being sent to work into prostitution.

Compasio was formed in 2006 to focus the issue of women and children at risk in Thailand. Most ministry is focussed on the migrant community and tribal groups living along the Thai-Burmese border, who are among the poorest and highest at-risk people groups of Thailand.

The Heart of Compasio

Seeing a need, feeling compassion and acting with practical love on behalf of those who are poor, needy and at risk, this is the heart of Compasio.   See.Feel.Act

Our Values (What’s important to us)

Knowing & Loving God

We believe in a God that made us, cares for us and relates with us. Although, He is infinitely greater than us in knowledge, character and ability, yet He has made it possible for us be in relationship with Him.  Knowing, loving, and following Him are our first and highest callings in life.

Communication is an essential part of our connection with God in which we can both express our hearts and needs to Him as well as having Him speak to us in a variety of ways. This two way conversation is vital to our work and to our personal lives and should always be our first step of action.

Knowing and Loving Others

Loving others is and caring for our “neighbor” is essential.  Caring for the poor, needy, oppressed and lonely, orphans & the widows are particularly important. Compassion is the connection between our awareness of a need  and our decision to respond to that need.

Action (Living what we believe)

True belief & love must lead to active response on our part. If we truly believe the words of Jesus and honestly care we will be moved to respond.

Humility

Although we may serve in different roles, have different talents and spheres of influence, we are all equal in value in the eyes of God.  No person, from the smallest child to the poorest beggar, the elderly, the disabled or the discarded is of lower value on eternal scales.  No one, regardless of talent, position, role or accomplishment is higher than these in the eyes of God.  Each person has something of value to contribute. It is important that we realize this and exhibit it among those we serve.

Community

We can be so much stronger, richer, better when we work together graciously valuing one another with all our differences. Good community, like a good family, not only builds those within but is an example to those around of what God intends in relationship.

Expressing Our Beliefs

Compasio will always be identified as Jesus-centered in our lives, our motivation and our works. Communicating this relationship is always done naturally in a spirit of love and humility. Our works and words will always communicate to those we serve, at the very least, these three things: i) We love God ii) We love you iii) God loves us all.

Being Visionary and Creative

Vision, creativity and initiative taking are important to us and key for growth. We want to encourage and support Compasio staff and teams to take creative initiative in putting their talents to work.

Leadership as Service

Leadership is a role of service, not a position of power or prestige. Just as Jesus served His disciples, we stress the importance of those with leadership responsibilities serving those whom they lead. Leaders need to honor the gifts and callings of those under their care,  empowering and facilitating their hearts, vision and calling.
